Stepping Outside the Construction Bubble: Why Community Matters in Business

In construction, our days are measured in m³ and m². We talk in volumes, spans, loadings, timelines, pours, and program sequencing. Long hours. Big projects. Constant movement. And while we love the industry we’re in, growth doesn’t just come from staying inside your own lane, it comes from stepping outside of it.
Last year, I joined Showcase SA with a simple intention: To surround myself with people from completely different industries. Not just builders and developers. But astronauts. Farmers. Humanitarians. Creatives. Founders. Leaders. People making a real impact in their own unique ways.
Because leadership isn’t industry-specific.
Vision isn’t industry-specific.
Courage isn’t industry-specific.
The Power of Perspective
On Wednesday, I attended the annual International Women’s Day Lunch hosted by Showcase SA. The room was filled with business owners, executives, innovators, and community leaders with all with vastly different stories, yet united by one common thread: building something meaningful.
Why This Matters to Construction
At SA Formwork & Concrete, we spend our days delivering structural integrity on site. But leadership requires more than technical precision... it requires perspective.
Stepping outside the “construction bubble” does a few powerful things:
It sharpens communication
It strengthens emotional intelligence
It builds stronger networks
It expands problem-solving thinking
It reinforces purpose beyond profit
We’re All Building Something
The biggest takeaway from the event? No matter what industry we’re in, we are all building something meaningful. Some build structures. Some build businesses. Some build communities. Some build change.
A sincere thank you to Steve Testar for creating a space that brings such incredible women and leaders together. Spaces like this matter. They elevate conversation. They expand thinking. And they remind us that growth happens when you step beyond what’s familiar.
At SA Formwork & Concrete, we’re proud of the structures we deliver, but we’re equally proud to be part of a broader community of leaders shaping South Australia in their own way. Because in the end, we’re not just building projects. We’re building impact.
